A heartwarming summer session in Arashiyama’s bamboo grove
We recently had the joy of photographing a lovely family from Hong Kong in Kyoto’s iconic bamboo grove in Arashiyama. The session featured a father, a mother, and their adorable 1.5-year-old daughter — and it was more than just a photo shoot. It was a gift from one of their close friends, thoughtfully arranged to celebrate their first trip abroad as a family.
For the couple, this was their first time traveling with their child, and for their daughter, her very first trip anywhere. What made it even more special is that they had visited Kyoto years ago for their honeymoon. Returning now with their little one to the very place where their journey as a couple began made this experience truly meaningful.

Why Arashiyama’s Bamboo Forest Is Perfect for Family Photos?
Japan in July, August, and even September can be extremely hot — often more so than many tropical countries. Kyoto, in particular, is known for its intense heat and humidity, and it can be dangerously hot in the middle of the day. Many visitors are surprised by how severe the summer weather can be.
Because of this, we usually recommend photo sessions in the early morning, late afternoon, or even at night to avoid the heat. However, with very young children, adjusting to these timeframes isn’t always easy.
That’s why the Bamboo Grove in Arashiyama is such a perfect location. The entire path is shaded by tall trees, creating a cooler, more comfortable environment — even in the peak of summer. It’s one of the best spots in Kyoto for summer family photography.
A Toddler-Friendly, Relaxed Photo Experience in Kyoto
Knowing that their daughter was still very young, we kept things relaxed and flexible. We didn’t walk around too much and took breaks whenever needed — including a little nap time! We let her set the pace, and it worked beautifully.
Nap time can happen during the shoot, and that’s perfectly okay.
At first, she was a bit shy, but as we slowed things down and made it fun, she quickly warmed up. Before we knew it, she was calling me “Uncle Masa,” and we were all laughing and enjoying our time together. It turned into a really joyful experience for everyone.

Every Family is Different – So Is Every Session
As a photographer, I truly believe that every family is unique, and their photo session should reflect that. Especially when children are involved, there’s no one-size-fits-all approach. Some families love to explore and move around, others need a more gentle pace — and that’s completely okay.
What matters most is creating a space where everyone feels comfortable and can enjoy the moment. That’s how we capture genuine memories.

📍Location: Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
Address: Ogurayama Tabuchiyama-cho, Saga, Ukyo-ku, Kyoto-shi, Kyoto 616-8394, Japan
The Arashiyama Bamboo Grove is one of Kyoto’s most iconic and serene locations. Located in the Arashiyama district on the western edge of Kyoto, this enchanting path is lined with towering bamboo stalks that sway gently in the wind, creating a peaceful, almost otherworldly atmosphere.
Walking through the grove, visitors are surrounded by natural beauty and the soft sounds of rustling leaves and creaking bamboo. The filtered light and vertical lines of the bamboo make it a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers alike.
What makes this place especially attractive for photo sessions—especially in summer—is that the entire path is shaded. Even during Kyoto’s intense summer heat, the grove remains relatively cool and comfortable, making it ideal for families with children or anyone looking for a relaxing experience.
Easily accessible by train, Arashiyama is also home to other popular attractions such as the Togetsukyo Bridge, Tenryu-ji Temple, and the scenic Hozugawa River.
