Family Photography in Kyoto’s Old Town: Higashiyama’s Charming Streets

Family Vacation Photoshoot in Higashiyama District, Kyoto, Japan

We had the pleasure of photographing a lovely family from the U.S. — parents with two daughters — in Higashiyama, Kyoto. The soft evening light gave us beautiful shooting conditions. It was wonderful to see the girls open up and show a wide range of expressions.

Our job is a bit unique: we need to break the ice with clients the moment we meet. We try to speak gently and carefully with children so they can relax and feel as little tension as possible — that’s when the best smiles appear.

Very flexible, patient, kind and helpful with everything.

A Gentle Approach for Camera-Shy Kids

Before the shoot, the parents mentioned that their daughters were a little camera-shy. So we took a gentle and natural approach.

We started by letting the kids play freely—doing whatever felt fun and comfortable for them. This helped them relax and slowly get used to us without pressure.

Once they felt more at ease, we chatted with them and gradually added a little direction. We made animal sounds together, talked about school, and shared laughs.

By the end of the session, we were able to capture their genuine, happy smiles—moments full of warmth and personality.

Why We Love Working With Shy Kids

It might surprise you, but we often receive messages from families saying, “My kids don’t like being photographed.” And honestly—that’s one of our favorite kinds of sessions!

We love taking the time to build trust, connect, and let children express themselves naturally. No stiff poses, no forced smiles—just real, relaxed moments.

📍Location: Higashiyama District

Higashiyama is one of Kyoto’s most picturesque districts, known for its well-preserved historic streets, traditional wooden townhouses, and charming temples. Walking through the narrow lanes feels like stepping back in time, with famous landmarks such as Yasaka Pagoda, Yasaka Shrine, Maruyama Park, and Chion-in Temple nearby.

The area is especially popular for its mix of cultural heritage and scenic beauty — from stone-paved alleys lined with teahouses to hidden gardens and quiet shrines. It’s also one of the best places to experience the atmosphere of old Kyoto, making it a favorite spot for travelers and photographers alike.

For families, couples, or solo travelers, Higashiyama offers countless photo opportunities, whether it’s the iconic Yasaka Pagoda as a backdrop or simply strolling through the atmospheric side streets.
