"Excuse Me, Want Me to Take a Photo of You Two?" — A Surprise Proposal at Matsumoto Castle
It started the way a hundred ordinary tourist interactions do.
I was walking along the moat at Matsumoto Castle in the soft light of early evening when I spotted a couple lining up a photo of themselves with the castle behind them — the classic tourist pose, phone held at arm's length, that never quite gets the angle right.
"Excuse me, want me to take a photo of you two?"
She said yes without a second thought. Just a friendly stranger offering to help out, the way people do at famous landmarks all over the world.

The Setup
I took a few photos on his phone. Standard stuff — the two of them side by side, the castle framed just right behind them, the light hitting the black-and-white walls in that warm, late-afternoon glow that Matsumoto is known for.
Then I said, "Why don't you try a different pose? Face each other."
That was the cue.

The Moment
What she thought was a kind stranger snapping a few vacation photos was actually something that had been planned for weeks — a plan that included a proposal photographer working undercover as, well, a friendly tourist.
Her hands went to her face. He was already smiling before she said anything.

Caught in the Moment
The best part of shooting proposals this way — candidly, without the couple knowing exactly when the "real" photos start — is that there's no performing for the camera. Every reaction is real. The surprise is real. The laughter afterward is real.

And this time, we had an audience. A few tourists nearby had clearly figured out what was happening, and by the time the ring was on her finger, they were cheering along with us — a small crowd of strangers sharing in a stranger's happiest moment. That's one of my favorite things about proposing somewhere as public and beautiful as Matsumoto Castle: the joy doesn't stay contained to just the two of you.

Why Matsumoto Castle
Matsumoto Castle is one of Japan's oldest original castles, with its dramatic black walls earning it the nickname "Crow Castle." Unlike Kyoto's more crowded proposal spots, Matsumoto still offers wide open sightlines, a genuinely stunning castle silhouette, and — especially in the early morning or golden hour — long stretches where you can have a quiet corner of the grounds mostly to yourselves.
It also happens to be my hometown backyard, which means I know exactly where the light falls best at any time of day, and exactly which angle keeps the castle looking its most dramatic.

The Golden Hour Aftermath
We spent the rest of the golden hour just walking the castle grounds together — no more posing, no more "look here, look there." Just two newly engaged people, giddy and a little in shock, wandering along the moat as the sun went down behind the mountains.
