A Stroll Through Higashiyama, Kyoto – Looking Back
We photographed a couple enjoying a leisurely walk through Higashiyama, Kyoto.
These photos were taken several years ago, but as I revisit them for this blog, I’m reminded of the discoveries and lessons they bring. While my photographic style has evolved over the years, the core values I hold dear have remained the same
Looking Back at My Early Days in Tourist Photography
These photos were actually taken in 2018, which means they’re already seven years old. Around this time, I had just returned to Japan, and it was shortly after that I began doing this kind of tourist photography, capturing couples and travelers exploring Japan.
Having photos from seven years ago also shows that I’ve been doing this work for a while — seven years of experience, which I hope gives readers some confidence in my work.
There are many photographers out there, but not all of them have been working consistently over a long period. When choosing a photographer, knowing that someone has experience and a track record can be a reassuring factor. I hope this insight is helpful for anyone considering a photoshoot.
What We Value Most
For us, it’s not just about delivering beautiful photos — it’s about making the shoot itself an enjoyable experience. No matter how good the pictures are, if the shoot isn’t fun, it’s hard for people to fully immerse themselves. What people remember most is the experience, not just the images.
We approach our work not only as photographers but also as guides and friends, creating a welcoming and relaxed atmosphere so that our clients can truly enjoy the moment.
Before returning to Japan, I traveled extensively, visiting over 80 countries. What left the deepest impression on me was always the connections with local people. Beautiful scenery, delicious food, and famous tourist spots are wonderful, but the moments I remember most are the interactions with people I met along the way.
That’s why, as a local photographer, I aim not only to capture photos but also to share stories, chat, and connect with my clients — going beyond the role of a photographer to create a truly memorable experience.
“Masa is a wonderful photographer and person. He really took the time to get to know us, the entire photoshoot was like talking to an old friend. Not to mention he took beautiful photos of us. His passion for photography and willingness to connect with and help fellow travelers are what make him stand out.”
📍Location: Higashiyama District
Higashiyama is one of Kyoto’s most picturesque districts, known for its well-preserved historic streets, traditional wooden townhouses, and charming temples. Walking through the narrow lanes feels like stepping back in time, with famous landmarks such as Yasaka Pagoda, Yasaka Shrine, Maruyama Park, and Chion-in Temple nearby.
The area is especially popular for its mix of cultural heritage and scenic beauty — from stone-paved alleys lined with teahouses to hidden gardens and quiet shrines. It’s also one of the best places to experience the atmosphere of old Kyoto, making it a favorite spot for travelers and photographers alike.
For families, couples, or solo travelers, Higashiyama offers countless photo opportunities, whether it’s the iconic Yasaka Pagoda as a backdrop or simply strolling through the atmospheric side streets.
